Chapter Fourteen

Lucifer

* * *

In a flash of light, Misty is gone.

This separation is much more abrupt—much sharper—than when I lost her the first time. There is no pining glance; no helpless, sluggish gestures to halt the assailant in their tracks; only a snapping of fingers and an electric jolt.

Misty disappears from my sight like a blow to the stomach. I am winded with loss. Overcome by guilt. I promised I’d stay by your side. I promised I’d never let you go again. How could I let this happen?

“Oh, do relax, darling.”

Spinning around, I squint my eyes, adjusting to the bleached abyss surrounding me. Stretching out as far as my gaze can see, there is nothing but glossy pale floors and radiant mist, illuminated by blinding white.

I’m reminded, instantly, of Heaven and its overwhelming luminosity, but Heaven forbade my re-entry long ago. We must be somewhere in between; a celestial realm, certainly; but more of a psychic palace than a tangible space. Almost similar to Misty’s subconscious, when I was trying to cipher through her memories—a flat, dark, unending void, interrupted only by shimmery puddles of dream. But there are no dreams here. It is cold. Pristine. Utterly empty.

“You seem unimpressed.” Seraphina smiles, her snowy beauty almost too dazzling to behold. “All I want is for us to chat.”

“Take me back,” I demand, charging across the lifeless white void to approach her. “Return me to Misty at once.”

Seraphina rolls her eyes, clucking her tongue at me as though I’m an overbearing parent instead of an impassioned lover. “Don’t be so hasty, Lucifer. Your precious little shifter is just fine on her own.”

“She’s not on her own,” I remind Seraphina through gritted teeth. “You left her with Fallanx!”

“All the better.” She shrugs. “Gives the girl some company.”

“The company of her abuser? The company of a man who left her to rot?”

“Well, what did you expect?” Seraphina sighs. “They’re animals, are they not? That scar on your neck is testament enough to that.” She makes a face, her nose wrinkling ever-so-slightly in distaste. “Honestly, Lucifer. Don’t you know what kind of taint shifters carry? Fallen or not, you ought to preserve your celestial blood with greater earnest.”

“Taint?” I repeat, my voice strained with incredulity. “The only thing Misty has tainted me with is her mateship, and it is a burden I am honored to bear. As for animals…” I shake my head, not withholding the extent of my disgust. “Your cruelty far surpasses anything I’ve seen by a mortal. Even knowing what Fallanx would do to her, you took no issue sacrificing Misty’s welfare for your own purposes. Summon my company, wreak whatever chaos upon me you wish, but leave Misty out of it—she is innocent.”

“She bit you!” Seraphina insists. “Listen to yourself—you’ve been infected. Where is the proud, magnificent king of the Underworld I’ve heard so much about? That ‘innocent’ shifter is draining your very essence. With every care you extend her, you descend further into animalism, and you depart further from yourself.
